SEMI FINALS WRAP UP - PART 2

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

Please scroll down the page to catch up on Part 1 of our Semi Finals wrap up...

BOWL SEMI FINALS

The Dumb Waiters have just gone and done it! Ed and the gang are through to the Final and boy did they work hard to get there. In the evenings predicted nail biter a single point victory was just enough to see this rustic side advance to contest  for Bowl honours next Friday.

They dug deep, and deserved the win in the most hotly contested match of the night. For Clare and her Super Fairy Rainbow Unicorns it's into the Spoon Championship and as the holders will no doubt defend it with vigour and see out this season on a high. This team, Cup winners in 2017, came ever so close to another trophy final despite the fact I'm sure they thought the Tag Gods were against them throughout the Summer, however as is their form they were the first to congratulate the Dumb waiters  on their victory.

The smiles on the faces of Karen and Hawaii Try Oh! after the final whistle lit up Shay Murtagh Park and it was clear they have at last made it through to the Final and caps a brilliant season (so far) for the team who never let down their guard in the Semi Final. Hawaii Try Oh! battled bravely despite probably having the longest injury list of all our teams this Summer, well played Karen still all to do next Friday. The Fence were ever so close, but what a Summer it's been for Dean, as a first time Captain he marshalled his team brilliantly and led from the front, missing two or three regulars last evening proved critical but Dean and the gang know that major honours await the Fence in the not too distant future as this is a young talented side. There's still one more bite at the cherry this season for the Fence though in the Spoon Championship.

Shield Semi Finals

Galvin for Men find themselves in their second consecutive final and will be hoping to go one better than last season and finally get their hands on some silverware. It's been a season of ups and downs for Max, and boy, he's had to work hard, injuries and availability, just two of the hurdles he's had to deal with, but persistence has deservedly paid off and the Galvin crew will be hoping it all come's together one more time on Finals night. The aptly named For Ruck Sake must be wondering what on earth they have to do to get a win. I can hear Ross (away last night) reading the result and going "For Ruck Sake" or something very close to that. It's been a tough season but taking into account the fact the majority of our best dressed team are playing their first season, if they all stick at it better days are not to far off. Maybe next Friday's the night? you never know.

Ciaran has come through the Summer with a lot of pride and a rather sore nose, and can take a well deserved pat on the back as his Shay Murtagh team in their first ever Tag Season were brilliant. Correctly described last night as the Summers most improved team over the past ten weeks, it's definitely onward and upwards. It's not over yet though, one more week and the Spoon to play for next Friday for the Shay Murtagh gang. The Untouchables have made it through to the Final which will please our President no end (for obvious reasons) Our 2017 social Team of the Season recipients finally got the rub of the green and reversed their rotten run of bad luck losing out by a single point or two, all Summer long. It's all smiles now for Tony and our youngest squad with one more big night to come.

SEMI FINALS WRAP UP - PART 1

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

Where do I begin? After ten weeks one would think I would be short a word or two but after last nights Semi Finals a few new words such as praise and pride were added to my vocabulary.

It was an evening where both leagues finally came together and past rivalries were renewed, The quality on show by all our teams was simply brilliant.

Cup Semi Finals

In a repeat of last Summers Cup Final, Benny's (Olive's) Bunch, once again had that little bit extra in the tank to beat David's How I Tagged your Mother by the narrowest of margins.

Last season's heart stopper between these two sides was sensational so it could never be surpassed, WRONG! What we witnessed on Thursday was just brilliant for all the right reasons.  What a match.

Is this the year of Orange is the New Tag? Lets just say that last Summers plate winners now find themselves in the Cup Final following a brilliant ten weeks of Tag. Shane has ticked all the boxes so far, balanced team, defensively and in attack so much so that few can squeeze a result out of the Oranges.

Breaking Tag have had a tremendous season. This is a team that lives the ethos of the Championship year in year out, a real testament to Anna and the gang who despite the loss had the last word "Last try wins" No harm in trying Emma. We expect even greater things from Breaking Tag next Summer and possibly the spoon may be in the hands of the "flock" next Friday?

Plate Semi Finals

Nameless can no longer remain so, as the Plate Final beckons. This team deserves all the accolades mentioned last night as even in the absence of their iconic leader Michelle, the win was secured.  It's been steady progress over the last three seasons for Nameless and just reward for their efforts is Friday's Final.

Golden Oldies gave everything in the Semi, literally. They left nothing in the dressing room and barring a few injuries could have well found themselves in the final it was that close. Dec, Sinead and Paul worked tirelessly all season to bring the team on and this they did. Could next season finally be their year? One would think so.

The broadest smile of the night belongs to James and his crew Murray's Bar who have progressed to the Final. What is so remarkable about this feat is the team is comprised of mostly Tag Rugby debutantes. However on last nights performance especially in defence one would be forgiven for thinking this is a seasoned side. Well done.

Aidan and his Jelly Legs were so magnanimous in defeat they really deserve tons of credit. Nothing but praise for the victors and no complaints whatsoever, it reminds us of why this team were winners of the "Spirit of the Championship Award" in 2017.

The Jellies will bounce back no doubt and are relishing the opportunity of getting their hands and legs on the spoon this day week.

WEEK 9

SO MUCH FANCY TAG!

Good Morning and Happy Bank Holiday Everyone

Well we had a great old night Friday, Tag Rugby and the first opportunity to let our hair down at our Fancy dress night, thanks to the teams for kitting out in particular the Sheepish Breaking Tag, The Fittest 80's team ever for Ruck sake and the Super Fairy Rainbow Unicorns who definitely rolled the dice with their outfits. We were thrilled to once again welcome the MULLINGAR LIONS to the park for their annual Tag Championship fixture. A brilliant match ensued against a combined Hawaii Try Oh and For Ruck Sake with the Lions making it a third win in a row. Well done Guys. Thanks to Clare, Declan and all the parents and supporters who really enjoyed the game. I will leave the final comment to Finbar

Who's Next, Bring It On...

As for the Tag Championship itself, we start with the Red League, it all came down to Friday as important league points were up for grabs in the final round of matches.

Nameless and Galvin For Men battled it out for honours with Michelle and the gang prevailing over Max and his weakened side, who nonetheless fought bravely with more players on the injury list than on the pitch. However both teams have managed to find a Semi Final berth.

Dumb Waiters maintained their super recent form with another win this week over For Ruck Sake. Ed can be very happy with this Summers effort as for Ross and the gang it all hangs in the balance  vs The Chambers in the Shield Playoff Tuesday night.

James and Murray's Bar knew they would have to play one of their best matches all season to overcome the league leaders Orange is the New Tag and this they did however Shane's Oranges just managed to pip them and finish top seeds in the Red League.

Ciaran and the Shay Murtagh crew had it all to do against Benny's Bunch who once again did everything necessary to qualify for their second consecutive Cup Semi Final which is a testament to first time Captain this season, Olive's hard work  but take nothing away from Shay Murtagh, as tag debutantes this Summer they can be mightily proud of the effort over the past nine weeks.

The Yellow League Mini Blitz was as much fun as it was chaotic.

Thanks to all the participating sides (Super Fairy Rainbow Unicorns, How I tagged Your Mother, Untouchables, Jelly Legs, The Fence and Breaking Tag, who's efforts will be recognised on presentation night in a couple of weeks from now.

Thanks as always to our refs, James, Paul E, Paul R Colm, Brendan and Dwayne. Mick who had the grounds looking brilliant again this week, Conall and Denis who managed to feed the horde, and Liz who once again played a blinder behind the Bar

WEEK 8

HOW MUCH FUN WAS THAT?

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone.

Our Yellow League provided the heightened blood pressure as the final round of fixtures got underway and our Red League was, well lets just say, tremendously competitive as all our teams jockeyed for position knowing there's only one to play.

This week we begin with the Yellow League which concluded last night. The Final placings in the table are now decided and the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield Semi Finals for the Yellows are confirmed.

How I Tagged your Mother finish the League in a very familiar position and  enter the Cup knockout stages as top seed, closely followed by Breaking Tag, well done both to squads and Captains David and Anna who will no doubt be keeping a close eye on next weeks Red League results.

Of no less importance is the Plate Finalists which this year sees Jelly Legs who it must be said are having a tremendous season and Golden Oldies who got the results that mattered, none more important than last nights super victory, Congrats Aidan  and his Jellies and Dec's oldies.

The Bowl will feature The Fence who on their return to our Tag Championship have been brilliant, so a major pat on the back to the team and first time Captain Dean and Clare's Super Fairy Rainbow Unicorns who we know will be the toughest of opposition for whomever they play from the Red League

And so to the Shield and our weekly acknowledgement of Tony's Untouchables who yet again as has been the case all Summer came within a hairs breath of victory yesterday and the Chambers who have found it to be a difficult season but Ricky will be hoping for better fortune in the knockout matches.

In the Red corner it's going all the way to the last round next Friday with everything to play for, just look at the Table, Wow. Orange is the New Tag who on their bye week last night only have to look over their shoulder at the chasing pack  in particular Benny's Bunch and Murray's Bar hot on their heels. Dumb Waiters, Nameless, Hawaii Try Oh! and Galvin for Men are bunched up in P4 to P7 and how this plays out will be anyone's guess and so exciting. Shay Murtagh and For Ruck Sake once again didn't get the rub of the green but gave everything as always.

Last night was immensely enjoyable.

Thanks as always to our refs, James, Paul E, Colm and Brendan Conall, King of the Burgers and Katie who played a blinder behind the Bar.

WEEK 7

THRILLING TAG LEFT ME BREATHLESS

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

I had the greatest of pleasure wandering the pitches last night to see some sensational Tag rugby played by everyone and a lot of what I saw genuinely left me breathless. Well played Taggers.

Where do I begin? Well, I guess at the Top.

In the Red League last years Cup winners Benny's Bunch showed that form to inflict the first defeat of the season on Orange is the New Tag, well done to Olive and the almost rechristened Butler's Bunch and to Shane whose Oranges took it on the chin magnanimously, I'm quoting Wai who simply said "God, they were good tonight", exciting stuff.

Murray's Bar continue to impress, and in the match of the night (in my humble opinion) overcame a much depleted and brave Galvin for Men, who I think scored one of the Try's of the Championship (Video highlights later)

Nameless and Hawaii Try Oh! provided a nail biter in a contest that swung back and forth for the entire forty minutes as did For Ruck Sake and Shay Murtagh who could not be separated at the Final whistle and in a game that no one deserved to lose, that is exactly what happened, both sharing the points.

Dumb Waiters had their Bye Week.

The Yellow League really couldn't be more exciting and with the top 4 playing against each other next week, it's poised to be a classic night at the Park.

The front runners How I Tagged Your Mother got the win against the Chambers to retain their position at the summit, and David's squad is looking very strong at the right time of the season.

Hat's off to Anna and Breaking Tag whose improvement this Summer has been remarkable and in a thrilling encounter just got the better of the Untouchables who but for the bounce of a ball in all their fixtures so far would be in contention for a top spot.

The Fence and Jelly Legs provided two very important reminders of what our Championship is all about. Friendship and Fun. It certainly was a perfect example of why we play. Well done Aidan and Dean, your teams are a credit to you.

The Golden Oldies, seriously diminished due to availability, battled ever so bravely however it just wasn't enough against a  resurgent Super Fairy Rainbow Unicorns who showed yet again why year in year out they can never be underestimated.

Wow! What a night. Cheers everyone.

Thanks as always to our refs, James, Paul E, Paul R, Colm, and welcome back Dwayne who took charge in the middle and like a duck to water showed why he is such a good referee. We wish Paul R a lovely holiday next week but have to question why on earth he would miss a night at Shay Murtagh Park for Lanzarote? Puzzling? Conall was never busier at the BBQ and manged as always to meet the demand and the same can be said as ever of Liz at the Bar.

WEEK 6

WHO'VE WE GOT NEXT WEEK?

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

I always know we have arrived at the latter part of our Championship when the conversation immediately after the final whistle turns to next weeks fixtures and where are we in the tables?

Next Thursday as it happens and just by chance will be defining for every team as the fixture list has thrown up 8 of the most competitive matches of the season so far and as the tables (to be published shortly) will show, to hazard a guess as to who's going to compete in the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield Semi Finals at this point would be premature. Orange is the New Tag continue their brilliant run in the Red League to remain top and How I Tagged your Mother just got the better of Golden Oldies in a top of the table clash to remain in pole position in the Yellow League. Roll on next week.

Thanks as always to our refs, James, Paul E, Paul R, and Colm who would have been justified to ask for rain gear following last nights cloudburst. Liz and Katie in the bar and Conall at the barbie. Oh! and a special mention of thanks to our new timekeeper and bull horn operator (who I'd nearly remain "Nameless" but won't, Jaime Mc) for all the unexpected help last night.

WEEK 5

SO MUCH CHAOTIC FUN!

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

Whilst the Red League knuckled down and played out another fascinating Round of League matches the Yellow Mini Blitz got underway and was "simply the best" of craic! and from what appeared chaotic at times was genuinely great fun, even for the coordinator...

There's no doubt this wouldn't have been possible without our Referees. James, Paul R, Paul E, Colm (Thanks for staying on) and debutantes Eamonn and Brendan who kept everything in check and on track throughout the evening.

With so many matches at one time additional assistance was needed from the spectators, thanks in particular to Big Dave, who kept time, Woody with the megaphone and Fiona for laughing throughout.

Orange is the New Tag have now strung together an impressive five wins in a row but are being chased down by Benny's Bunch, Dumb Waiters and Murray's Bar. Hawaii Try OH! and Galvin for Men aren't too far off the pace for a top two finish. Newcomers Shay Murtagh and perennials For Ruck Sake just need a to click and get the rub of the green. A massive thanks to Michelle and the Nameless crew who provided much needed cover on their bye week.

The Yellow Mini Blitz comprised of the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals of the Challenge Trophy and Challenge Bowl actually had some of the most exciting Tag seen all year and with the matches played in ten minute halves it took only one score to make a difference.

Finally thanks to Mick who as ever had the venue looking fantastic. Liz who was under immense pressure but managed to quench everyone's thirst and of course Conall who's burgers just keep on getting better and for his entertaining banter.

WEEK 4

SOME LIKE IT HOT!

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

Ice creme and ice pops were in demand as Summer finally arrived at the Park last night and with that we also had some of the finest Tag yet this season. Teams are now finding their groove. Only one side has managed to gain maximum points in the Championship after 4 rounds (Wll done Orange is the New Tag) and this is reflected in both League tables which couldn't be closer. Genuinely, at this point it's really anyone's guess as to who will contend the Semi Finals of all five competitions.

We are only approaching the midway point and I'm certain the trend set so far will continue making it nigh impossible to forecast results on any given night.

Thanks to our referees for another wonderful job and we were delighted to see Dwayne who popped out and can't wait to don the orange jersey (hopefully) before seasons end.

Finally as ever thanks to all of you for a most enjoyable evening and to all are Captains for their continued hard work behind the scenes week in week out.

WEEK 3

RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS!

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

Only three weeks in and it's now apparent that the gap between the Cup, Plate, Bowl, Shield and Spoon contenders really is far too close to call even at this early stage as the results up to now have shown.

The "Team Spirit" and "Social Team" of the season Awards are also taking shape with some very notable front runners.

Thanks to everyone in particular our Referees who braved the most inclement weather we've had in seasons to battle through to the final whistle, A special word of thanks to Ross who donned the Orange referees jersey to take charge of a friendly having just played a  match.

Well done Jelly Legs and Nameless who landed their first maximum points of the Summer. Also very well done to Orange is the New Tag and Golden Oldies who now lead the way in their respective leagues.

Finally thanks to all of you. We've gone from ice cream and water breaks this time last season to waterproofs and woolie's without a complaint.

WEEK 2

IT'S ALL SO VERY CLOSE!

Good Morning and Happy Friday Everyone

There's no doubt in my mind we had the most competitive week for sometime yesterday evening with some titanic matches played out at the park. This is reflected in the League Tables which we'll publish shortly. It's fantastic to see some new names appear at the top and well done to Breaking Tag, Orange is the New Tag, Dumb Waiters and the Golden Oldies who have made it 2 wins from 2 in the Championship. It was also great to see the Chambers get off the mark, who will no doubt go from strength to strength as they do every Summer.

Once again our thanks to everyone who played their part in particular our men in the middle, (Burger king) Conall and of course Liz who not only quenched our thirst but provided the much need heat following an inclement June night.

Congratulations to everyone again as not a single card made an appearance, keep it going...

WEEK 1

THE SUN CAME OUT FOR ROUND 1

Good Morning, and Happy Friday Everyone.

It has to be said last night was a brilliant start to our Tag Championship, the sun made it's first appearance of the week and the effort put in by Teams and Captains alike was immense and very few first round hiccups were encountered. The skill on show was a testament to the nights of practice you all put in throughout May.

I'd like to thank our referees, James, Paul R, Paul E, and congratulate the latest addition to our panel Colm who made his Tag referee debut and did a fine job. It was also nice to see one of our stalwarts Julian, who, though injured at the moment came out to support his colleagues in the middle and hopes to take charge of a Fixture or Two before Summer's end (Wishing him a speedy recovery)

On the Pitch we had zero cards which once again is down to all of you. Well done.

Congratulations to our new sides Shay Murtagh and the Fence who put in great performances in their first outings in the Championship, and Murray's Bar who in their Bye week provided some much needed cover.
