Mullingar Claim the Cup in Portdara 10s
September 14, 2023
On sunny Saturday morning the Mullingar Senior Women competed in Portdara 10s. The tournament was played in blistering heat and the girls played a scorcher. First up was Tullow a fellow Division 1 team the ladies were just pipped 14-12 in their first challenge.
Greystones were the next opponents and a comfortable win settled the nerves again. The women moved the ball with considerably more pace and put more width on their plays as they settled into the game, which finished 30-0.
The hosts were up next in the last pool game, a 15-0 win for Mullingar meant both teams would progress to the Semi Final, where they would meet again. This was a physical battle with players picking up injuries on both sides, Mullingar coming out on top 10-0.
The Heifers third win in a row had them eagerly awaiting another crack at Tullow in the Cup Final, the only team to better the young side.
Tullow took a two try lead very early into the game but the Heifers dug deep to grab a try just before half time. The second half saw the ladies creating more space and pinpointing gaps with quick balls, getting over the gain line twice to go a try ahead. They worked hard to maintain the lead and win out the tournament!
Final score 17-12
Tries on the day from, Ciara Wynne, Kara Mulcahy, Molly Swanson, Georgia Young and Aine Hayden.
