Mullingar Ladies vs Edenderry

November 25, 2014

November 9, 2014. Ladies Leinster League Div1.
Mullingar 10 Edenderry 11
Heartache in last moment as women taste first defeat since February
By Finian Coghlan
Mullingar women got a timely reminder that they are in a competitive league
after they conceded a try in the fifth minute of injury time to lose to a
very useful Edenderry outfit by the narrowest of margins.
After three sizeable wins in the league so far, perhaps there may have been
a little bit of chicken-counting going on as they looked towards the
Nirvana of AIL rugby, however Sunday’s little hiccup may be the
anti-complacency kick in the bum the team required as they face into the
toughest games of the season against Longford and Tullow.
Edenderry looked handy from the off, and the lead they took with an 18th
minute penalty was the first time Mullingar were behind all season.
This was perhaps the necessary poke the home side needed and they reacted
womanfully.
In the 24th minute captain Crilly knocked a penalty to the line in the
Edenderry 22 and the team went to work.
Claire O’Brien won the aerials and landed with the rehearsals in mind.
Straight from the training ground the very impressive Katie Layde came on a
hard gallop peel and took the ball down blind with a full element of
surprise. Though she was nabbed, it was not before she managed to find her
newbie back row colleague Sara Crosbie for a well-earned try.
Mullingar now had the high dander and rumbled on with some dash.
Two minutes later Clodakins put her dainty shoulder to good use, and
punched a sizeable hole in midfield. She found the speedy Gibson who in
turn linked with the sublime Olive Butler who just lit the burners and
scorched in from 40 metres for her ninth try of the season.
Mullingar were now in some clover, but instead of getting clinically
medieval with them, they lifted the murder paw, and allowed Edenderry
oxygen they didn’t deserve.
Early in the second half the visitor worked some hard earned possession all
the way to the Mullingar line, but Katie Layde was paying full sentry
atrtention, and her line remained inviolate.
Their pressure didn’t go unrewarded, however, and they narrowed the gap to
10-6 with a 15th minute penalty for what looked like it might be the only
score of the second half.
Try as they might, Mullingar couldn’t get into a position to extend the
horrible four-point gap, although they still looked strong enough to hold
out. And this they did until deep into stoppage time when the visitors
worked some hard ball up the Mullingar flank and laid line siege.
It looked like Mullingar had done enough in the final ruck and were set to
clear for the line and full-time whistle when pivot and skipper Crilly was
creamed with a charge-down behind her line and it was an Edenderry body who
dropped on the loose ball to break home hearts by the singular point.
