Sunday Lunch...

November 28, 2014

Sunday lunch, being served up two of this seasons tastiest encounters.

For the first time in five years, since Joe Schmitt brought the Leinster squad to train, Westmeath’s sporting focus this weekend will be on Mullingar Rugby Club with both mens and womens teams facing table-topping fixtures at home on Sunday.
The men’s team is seeking promotion to Leinster Division 1 rugby for the first time in 12 years, and has set up this possibility nicely by topping their table undefeated at the halfway point of the season.
However, and here’s the rub. The outfit they face on Sunday is North Kildare, a team just a point behind them in the league, and one they haven’t beaten in their last three outings.
Defeated home and away by them last year, Mullingar needed a last minute try on their patch in the final game of the season to secure the losing bonus point which actually kept Mullingar from being relegated.
The sides then faced each other again in the opening game of this season when Mullingar pulled the same rabbit out of the hat to again nick an injury time try and a 22-all draw in a breathless encounter.
Arguably, though, it may be the womens’ match that is more intriguing as they are already in Division 1 and in hot pursuit of AIL status, an achievement no team in the club has managed in its 90-year history.
However, in their way on Sunday is the formidable Tullow, a side one point above them, undefeated this season, and yet to concede a try.
Though Mullingar had the honours home and away against them last season, both wins were by the single score, and Tullow got the Indian sign on them when they incredibly stole the league final on penalties after an unprecedented 0-0 draw on a swamp in Edenderry.
However, in favour of both sides is their cobra-like attack mode, with each team averaging more than five tries a game throughout their league campaign, and conceding less than two.
So if you fancy an exhilarating afternoon of rugby this weekend Cullion is the place to be, with the women kicking off at 1pm, and the men at 2.30.
