FIRSTS ADVANCE TO 1B/2A DIVISIONAL PLAY OFF

March 09, 2015

March 8, 2015. Leinster League Div 2A
Mullingar 69 Garda 0
By Finian Coghlan
After a month’s break Mullingar saw out their league season proper secure
in second place with a facile, 11-try romp against a thoroughly
disheartened though honourable Garda opposition.
This result qualifies Mullingar for a promotion play-off against second
last in Division 1B Newbridge, ironically at North Kildare – the only team
to beat Mullngar in the league this season – at 3pm on Sunday.
However victory here will not guarantee promotion, as the Leinster branch
will have to see how many of its teams are relegated from the AIL when it
concludes later in the month before knowing whether it can promote one or
two from each of the lower divisions.
True to the promise he gave to his dad, Eoghan Gantly opened the scoring
against John’s former team in the 3rd minute and opened the floodgates.
Mullingar bared all their teeth with every possession, and had the bonus
point in the bag in just 16 and a half minutes with additional tries from
Butler, Raleigh and a weavy treat from distance by top scorer Andrew Coade.
Arthur then got on the score sheet with a snipy dive on a loose ball after
his scrum bullied Garda off the ball from five metres out, while the zippy
Maxwell added a sixth just before the break with a well timed kick and
chase to leave Mullingar 36-0 at half time.
Coach Maybury emptied the bench and normal service resumed.
In just the third minute Reilly should’ve opened his account but couldn’t
hold on with only empty acres ahead.
However, he made full amends just seven minutes later with a Coade-like
dribble from 40m to go in under the posts.
The younger Coade sibling was next off the mark just four minutes later
when he finally put his magic sidestep to proper use and brought up the
half tone within the hour.
In the 61st minute Alex Moran looked like he had a gimme after great work
from Daz Brady, but he was held up under the sticks. However, Garda were
again mugged from the subsequent 5m scrum and the ref gave a penalty try.
Five minutes later Raleigh bagged his second in the right corner after good
hands across the line.
Right away from the kick off the highly impressive Davy O’Reilly was on top
snaffle form and won back possession. The ball was flashed with the aplomb
this back line has done so effectively all season, and Andrew Coade was on
the end for his 17th try of the season.
The referee then did the decent thing and put the game out of its misery
with probably 13 minutes remaining.
Now all eyes turn to North Kildare next Sunday, and more importantly, to
the lower reaches of AIL Division 3 for the subsequent weeks.
