Heifers lay down large marker in pursuit of second trophy

And so the show goes on. After a few days celebrating their historic win
last week in Donnybrook, Mullingar women returned to the office with what
looked like a tricky assignment against the Division 2 champions Railway
Union in the first round of the Paul Flood Cup.
However, despite spurning half a dozen glorious scoring opportunities,
Mullingar still posted an imperious half century at home on Sunday to send
out the loudest message across Leinster .
This victory was particularly sweet for a number of the veterans on the
team who were on the receiving end of the reverse score plus some only
three years ago against the same club – a result that almost saw a
collective hat being thrown at the then embryonic Heifer project.
Yet they chose to persevere, and the grins of well-earned satisfaction in
the mud of last Sunday was testament to the rightness of that decision.
Playing with the huge gale, Mullingar knew they needed to use it
effectively, and this they did quickly.
As early as the second minute with Railway trying to play it out from their
own 22, Olive Butler robbed possession in a tackle to put her side on the
front foot.
After just two minutes of pressure the crack appeared, and it was Clodagh
Cleary from the back of a scrum 10m out that exploited this for the opener.
Along with her fellow velociraptors Layde and Crosby, Cleary looked like
she was thoroughly enjoying herself out there, and this confidence poked
her into a tap’n’go penalty just outside their 22 in the 9th minute.
Railway scrambled just enough to thwart this threat, but had no answer to
the fast hands of Holmes and her speedsters outside before Kelly sythed
through for her 11th try of this glorious season.
Five minutes later Olive Butler found her first empty acres with three
outside but Gibson just couldn’t hold the pass.
No matter. Immediately after Katie Layde got her first big bash at Railway
and made it just short. A quick recycle again was their undoing and Teenie
Burke was on the end to slither in for a well-earned 17-0 lead.
Railway consolidated over the next quarter of an hour, and finally broke
through in the 30th minute, only to see their effort snuffed out by the
pacy cover of the Mullingar backs. Tayto was then fed and she launched a
bomb on the gale to which her pack gleefully piled up on and re-won
possession on the visitors 22.
Again, quick hands through Layde and Gibson going left allowed the elegant
fullback to stretch her legs and she went the long way round to go under
the sticks for 24-0.
This should have been extended just before the break when Crosby looked
like benefitting from another Butler break but she was surprisingly
dispossessed when dropping over the line.
Turning to face the gale, we waited to see if the visitors could take
advantage, but this was quickly put to bed in just the 4th minute of the
second half when Jenny Gibson made excellent amends for her first half
fumble when she galloped in from her own half for 31-0.
Then, with Mullingar in total domination, she doubled her account in the
56th minute when she was canny enough to be off Butler’s shoulder after a
superb break.
Immediately from the re-start Mullingar got the pill into the trusty Kelly
paws and she pinned the ears back and went for it. A desperate tackle at
the line just caught her and she agonisingly dropped the ball in the
stretch for the line.
However, Railway found it impossible to break out, and after a few minutes
of sustained pressure skipper Crilly snuck a canny one into the corner.
The lively Gillian Kelly now joined the fray, and her fresh legs kept the
go-forward momentum going.
Crilly almost bagged her second after great work from Layde, but in the
65th minute was shown how to do it by Cleary who poked and pushed all the
way from 40m for a wholly deserved second.
Then, two minutes into injury time the highly industrious Sylvia Rattigan
bashed through the Railway line and found former winger Adrienne Andrews
outside to for her to breach the half ton threshold.
Forthcoming fixtures
Next Sunday (April 5) will see ac double header at home with the 1st XV
taking on Wexford in the Towns Cup Plate, and the 3rd XV playing Boyne
after their impressive 27-12 first round win in Tullamore on Sunday.

at this level”.
The women will play Tullamore at 1pm on April 12 in the quarter final of
the cup, at home in Shay Murtagh Park.
This Saturday evening the club is hosting its major fundraiser of the year
with a fashion show in the Park Hotel.

gentlemen’s outfitters and one kids store and will be modelled by players
from across the entire club, from the under-8s to the seniors.
A raffle will be held in which the top prize is a Roy Lindsay original of
the late, great Moss Keane in full flight from the 1982 Triple Crown.
Music will be provided by Niall Barrett, whilst your hosts will be Finian
Dolce and LeeAnn Gabbana.
