PLATE SECURE SEMI FINAL BERTH MULLINGAR 55-17 WEXFORD WANDERERS

April 07, 2015

April 5, 2015. Towns Cup Plate R2
Mullingar 55 Wexford 17
By Finian Coghlan

Mullingar powered on in this consolation tournament with a very impressive
eight-try demolishment of Wexford Wanderers at Shay Murtagh Park last
Sunday.
With an insouciance verging on the louche, Mullingar put up their 99th try
of this dazzling season, and even though they posted a half century plus on
the scoreboard, there will be a few pinched noses at not having got the try
count into triple figures.
It was not without its attrition, however, and at one stage Mullingar had
an unprecedented six centres in the dugout after starters Gantly and Jack,
and then replacements Liddy and Pyke, all eventually took the slow stroll
to the bench to join their unavailable colleagues Henry Reilly and Alan
Brabazon on what then became the club’s most valuable piece of furniture.
Strangely, Wexford opened the scoring with a penalty in the 5th minute, but
it was almost as if it was the cheap price of evaluation.
The speedsters were now warming up, and Raleigh made a couple of test darts
down his right wing.
In the 10th minute, Mullingar ripped and robbed in a maul on their 22, and
Coade the Younger sniped off for his first dander. Though caught a few out,
he managed to present the ball for Biffo the Blair to pick expertly and
open the Mullingar account.
Butler put the safety distance between the teams with a penalty 10 minutes
later, and now it was time to soar.
Straight from the restart, Brabby took and fed Matthew whose almost
pinpoint kick up the left wing was taken sweetly by Ryan Tighe at pace on
the bounce. He looked inside for support and found Andrew Coade, who then
played it to Ganto who wove and wobbled the remaining defenders into
twisted blood, before handing back to Coade for a beautiful walk-in.
Again, immediately from the kick-off, it’s ping-ping-ping down the left
side to put Tighe through untouched, only for the ref to call it back for a
contentious forward pass.
Properly irked, they drove the next scrum into a penalty and went for the
corner. The take and rumble was textbook, and though they couldn’t break
through on the first phase, a move outside was called and Ganto magicked
the snake hips under the sticks for 24-3.
A minor doze while waiting for the half time whistle allowed the visitors
an easy seven, but it wasn’t long before normal service returned.
Just five minutes into the second half and Arthur Brabazon took the sniping
advantage after a great break through by Davy O’Reilly, and then again four
minutes later, after good work from Biffo and debutante Donal Liddy – the
latest tasty acquisition in the Maybury assembly line of youth.
In the 16th minute, Brabazon was instrumental again, when he collected adn
lossed his outside pacers from within his own 22.
By the time Andrew Coade got his hands on it with only 60m to go, there wa
almost a collective ‘Meh’ and shrug as we waited the inevitable six or so
seconds it took him to bag his 20th of the season.
Another little doze allowed Wexford bag a silly second for 45-17, but with
five minutes remaining a monster hit from Cormac Dunne in the middle of the
field turned over possession and the hyenas scavenged with gusto. Brabazon,
Butler and Coade Snr. Helped insure Diarmuid Raleigh got the score he
sorely deserved.
That brought up the half-century, but yet it wasn’t enough, and with the
last play of the game the bottomless pit that is Davy O’Reilly added an
eighth.
