Mullingar vs Railway Union

October 18, 2014. Leinster League Div2A.
 Mullingar 23 Railway Union 8
Mullingar go top as farewell present to Kerroum
By Finian Coghlan
Promotion remains right on track for Mullingar after they clinically
dispatched their nearest rivals in an electrifying display under the lights
in Cullion on Saturday evening.
Most satisfying, however, was the step up in emphasis from the front eight,
seemingly tired of the ladyboys out the back getting all the credit
recently, the pack growled with a menacing verve fully unleashed against an
unfortunate Railway Union.
Front and foremost in this resurgence was the outstanding stand-in skipper
who practically turned Cullion into Maxwell’s house.
Touchlined captain Darryl Quinn remarked just before the kick-off how
Maxwell’s pre-game demeanour was like as if “he’d had a lick of the
rabies”, and the relish with which he threw himself at non-Mullingar
anatomies bore more than a passing resemblance to the demented residents of
Baskerville.
It was almost as if Derek and Dermot had kept him starved in a cellar for
the week, and then gave the wipe of a steak to each passing Railway
fundament as they made their unsuspecting way to the pitch.
And he was ably accompanied into the darker corners by a similarly ravenous
Daz Brady, Ritchie Pyke, Davy O’Reilly, and the awesome Thumpy Blair.
It was almost as if they wanted to show Dermot Dunne there would be no more
softys like the two in injury time last week, but also as a testamentary
thank you to the emigrating Adi Kerroum for his stout minding of the
Mullingar house for the opening eight games.
Mullingar came to the game like a Viking at a convent gate, and just tore
into their table-topping rivals from the off.
Butler landed an early monster, with Maxwell and Blair leading the bosh
brigade.
In just the sixth minute, with Peppard spraying right and left, Railway
were stretched all over the place, and the Bull O’Reilly took advantage of
one of these gaps for his second in two weeks.
Maxwell was now in the middle of everything and this presence won another
penalty for Butler in the 12th minute.
Mullingar now had a period of soakage, but under the orchestration of Jack,
the defence was immense.
They almost made it to halftime but for a moment of sleepiness in the
clubhouse corner for the visitor’s first score.
Mildly embarrassed, Mullingar revert to serious bosh, and unsurprisingly,
Maxwell broke the next hole before loosing Kerroum into the 22.
They worked the phases to the line and almost identically to the first try,
stretched their opposition to the point that Peppard could pick his dancing
gap to go in under the sticks for an 18-5 halftime lead.
Dermot most’ve brought the cattle prod to the huddle, because Mullingar
came out like a scalded cat and were knocking at the Railway door within
seconds. Maxwell, Jack and Brabby all had cuts before the impressive Butler
picked an unstoppable line and steamed in like a choo-choo.
Maybury began to exercise his bench each new arrival to the fray did their
damnedest to impress the boss, and hold the solid fort.
All Railway could manage in the second half was one measly penalty, and
were let nowhere near the Mullingar line.
The home side maintained a policy of containment for the rest of the game,
and saw it out for an emphatic 23-8 victory.
