March 15, 2015. Leinster League Div 2A/1B promotion/relegation playoff
Mullingar 43 Newbridge 22
Conditional promotion achieved with six-try romp
By Finian Coghlan
So, that’s it. They can do no more but sit and wait, and pray that only one
Leinster team gets demoted back to junior rugby from the AIL if Mullingar
are to take their deserved place in Division 1B next season.
In what was their20th game of the season – W17 L2 D1 - Mullingar cut loose
with the verve that has been the hallmark of this season, and ran in six
wonderful tries against a hapless and demoralised opposition to
‘technically’ win promotion with a large asterisk that may take another
fortnight to erase.
The steely determination was evident in the warm-up and it was quickly
translated to the field of play, so much so that Mullingar had bagged the
bonus point just a minute and a half longer than it took last week against
Garda.
Everything they touched in the opening minutes looked like it was going to
be a score, such was the superiority of the scarlet and dove greys.
The opener only took two minutes to register. An early penalty went down
the right touchline, which Cormac Dunne then fetched out of the sky. It was
flashed with menace along the line and Henry Reilly was at the fortunate
end for his second in a week.
Direct from the re-start after a Newbridge spill, they were off again and
were knocking at the tryline in seconds flat, only to be pinged for a
forward pass.
In the 10th minute Matt Coade found the gap only to be taken out quite
maliciously, and though Butler missed touch, nobody had any idea how much
amends he was about to make.
He was back to collect in the 22 and with a quick look, stepped on the gas.
He linked up with Alan Brabazon who wove his way through the Newbridge
defence before finding the delivery system out wide at full pace.
Unbelievably, again straight from the re-start, it was the wily Conor
Jack’s turn to demonstrate the snake hips as he drove a coach and four
through the Newbridge lines.
Any one of five could have scored but it was the super ferret Davy O’Reilly
who barrelled over from short.
And still they weren’t satisfied.
Again straight from the re-start Daz Brady decided he wanted in on the fun,
and his deceptive pace found him in open acres with a three-man overlap.
However, a minor brainfart saw his pass go harmlessly behind the intended
target, and Newbridge thought they might draw a first breath.
Wrong. The ever hungry Gantly made the break on recycling, and moments
later he put in O’Reilly for his deserved second, and an impressive 22-0
lead in just the 18th minute.
Congratulating themselves a little bit, Mullingar chose to doze for
Newbridge’s first visit to the 22 and a very soft try was conceded. Then
Maxwell got his first yellow for a dropped shoulder, and in this period,
Newbridge added a penalty to now be within two scores.
Mullingar slapped themselves awake, and a Butler intercept should have been
Coaded to the corner but he checked and was caught. However, a little extra
daylight was put between the teams with Butler’s last kick of the half to
see them to the break 25-10 up.
He then added two more ‘insurancers’ in the opening minutes, before the
verve was re-found.
After some great work from the pack to rumble with intent into Newbridge
territory, Arthur flashed it right with their defence in mortal disarray,
and Butler backed himself for the gap and his eighth of the season.
Now it was time for the second snooze. Firstly, Hannon got yellow carded in
the 57th minute, and two minutes later they got their second try after a
very rare missed Blair tackle.
Then, with Hannon just back, Cormac Dunne went and collected his sixth of
the season, and he was joined on the line permanently by Maxwell just three
minutes later after he was issued his second.
Peversely, with only 13 players, Mullingar managed to bag a sixth try with
five minutes remaining after Newbridge spilled the pill trying to break out
of their 22.
Captain Quinn tided up the loose ball and was sharp enough to find Andrew
Coade, who then popped to Alex Moran for his first of the season.
Newbridge managed a late, unconverted consolation, but it was too little
and way too late.
Now for the awful wait, and promotion (or not) notification by post.
